TUANZ is calling for a new approach to data use in New Zealand, one that moves beyond lengthy privacy policies and one-off consent towards greater transparency, trust, and individual control. In its new Transparent Data Use position paper, TUANZ argues that as AI and data-driven services become increasingly embedded in daily life, organisations must act as trusted stewards of data, ensuring people clearly understand how their information is used and can make informed choices. The paper outlines four key priorities, including explainable AI, standardised data labels, stronger consumer control of data, and support for Māori data sovereignty, to help build a high-trust, high-growth digital economy.
